Some in Westfield concerned downtown may be becoming a violent teen hangout

(09/25/04) WESTFIELD - Some residents in Westfield say their downtown, filled with shops and cafes, has become a violent nighttime hangout for teenagers.

The family of a 15-year-old boy, who was on his way to an ice cream shop, says he was recently attacked by a group of other kids in a parking lot behind a Starbucks and a popular movie theater.

By day, the town is filled with shoppers and families, and some people say they have not seen any trouble at night. But many others believe more police patrols are needed and are asking downtown stores for help by adding private security.

The Mayor of Westfield has not returned a call to News 12 New Jersey on this issue.
