NICU at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson celebrates 30 years with reunion

(09/26/04) PATERSON - The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson celebrated 30 years of success on Sunday for saving the lives of babies born premature or with complications.

Parents and children reunited with doctors and nurses to thank them, catch up and share in the music, fun and games. Doctors say many babies who are born prematurely or with early complications can survive and lead normal lives, and the reunion proves it.

The NICU at St. Joseph's is believed to be one of the oldest such units in the country. It opened in July of 1974, and workers there have treated more than 25,000 babies. They saw more than 840 babies last year alone.
