Ammonia leak forces residents to evacuate Passaic County town

A leaking ammonia tank leads to theevacuation of several residents in Hawthorne.

Authorities say the cause of the leak at the Fisk Alloy Manufacturing plant isn't known yet. No injuries were reported.

The leak was reported late Sunday night, and the evacuations were then ordered as a precaution. The leak was capped about an hour later, say police.

Exposure to liquid ammonia can cause health problems such assevere burns to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract.
