Hackensack High School teacher's assistant in trouble with the law

A Hackensack High School teachers assistant is accused of punching a 16-year-old student in a classroom.

Hackensack police say 49-year-old Layafette Donnell was writing a math problem when the student made a comment about the problem. They say Donnell then punched the student in the ribs. The student collapsed and ultimately had a seizure. He is now in stable condition.

School officials do not know if the attack was horseplay or if Donnell had some other motive.

Donnell is also a football and track coach at the school. He was arrested without incident at his Hackensack home and faces 10 years in prison and a fine of $150,000 if convicted.
