Police believe fatal car explosion in Weehawken was an accident

Police believe the car explosion in Weehawken that killed a man Thursday may have been an accident.

FBI and ATF agents responded to the scene on Hackensack Plan Road, just blocks from the Lincoln Tunnel. Neighbors who heard the blast say they thought it was a bomb. However, hours into the investigation, the FBI ruled out terrorism.

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau is handling the investigation. They say the explosion was caused by some sort of gas that may have leaked out of tanks inside the car. However, it is still unclear what sparked the blast.

According to officials, the blast shattered windows, blew out garage doors and blackened the concrete faade of a nearby building.

The victim was believed to be in his mid-20s, but has yet to be identified.
