Man struck and killed by bus in Essex County

Leonelle Taylor, Jr. of East Orange was struck and killed by a New Jersey Transit bus as he stepped off a curb at the intersection of North Park Street and Burchard Avenue in East Orange.

The 48-year-old victim, a bus driver for a Baptist church, stopped at a local deli when a passerby informed him that his bus was moving. Taylor stepped off the curb and was then hit by a New Jersey Transit bus.

Residents say the intersection is very dangerous. They add that many accidents have occurred there.

Officials for New Jersey Transit say that no passengers were on the bus at the time of the accident since the bus was out of service. The driver was taken to a local hospital for observation.
