New Jersey Muslims politically minded as Ramadan begins
As the holy month of Ramadan begins, politics have made a way into the thoughts of many Muslims. And as Election Day also approaches, a majority of New Jersey area Muslims are hoping for a change in office.
A recent poll of American Muslims indicate that Senator John Kerry is heavily favored to win this year's election against President George W. Bush by a margin of 76 percent to 7 percent. This is a drastic swing in votes, compared to November 2000 where Muslims supported Bush during that election.
Although endorsing a political candidate is not allowed for religious leaders across the country, many Muslim spiritual leaders as well as non-profit organizations hold voter registration drives to encourage their members to be politically active.
