Sheriff's officers in Somerset hand out free firearm safety kits across county

(10/16/04) WARREN TOWNSHIP - Sheriff's officers in Somerset began handing out free firearm safety kits to people across the county on Saturday.

The kits include gunlocks, which fit on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. Funding for the safety kits came from the federal Project Child-Safe program.

Police say they want to make sure family-owned guns are secured and out of the reach of children so serious accidents can be avoided.

The officers are visiting four different towns during the next week and a half. Somerset is one of several counties in New Jersey that participates in Project Child-Safe.
