Officials investigate apartment fire that claimed the life of a Newark man

Authorities in Newark are investigating the circumstances surrounding an apartment fire that claimed the life of a man Friday morning. The apartment, located in a building at 58 Evergreen Lane, has a history of fire code violations. Neighbors say the victim was a heavy pipe smoker. Authorities have not released his name, but they say he was about 58 years old and his body was found in his bed. They say it was a small fire that smoldered on a chair in the living room. Investigators did not give specifics, but they did say there is a history of fire code violations in the housing complex. Authorities say they have a number of questions they want answered.
