New card will allow day laborers in Freehold to open a bank account

Freehold is home to a large number of undocumented Mexican nationals. Now, despite their status, the Mexican Consulate is trying to help them open bank accounts. The day laborers may soon be making a financial statement thanks to a form of identification known as a Matricular Consular Card. Once issued, a day laborer will be able to take the card along with a passport and open an account at Wachovia Bank. Not everyone, however, is fond of this newfound right. Some say money earned by day laborers is not being spent in Freehold, instead it is sent back to their families in Mexico. The Mexican Consulate will issue the cards Saturday at the First United Methodist Church.
