Three women killed after SUV careens off path, plunges into Passaic River in Newark
(10/24/04) NEWARK - Police say three women died early Sunday morning when their SUV careened off the gravel path of Raymond Boulevard near Oxford Street in Newark and plunged into the Passaic River.
Family members identified 43-year-old Gail Williams as the driver. State police and diving units were called in to look for Williams and her two passengers. Newark cops say divers made three to four attempts to save the women, but they were already dead after being pulled from the water.
Authorities have identified the passengers as Nicole Floyd and Monique Hawkins, both in their 30s. Their family and friends say they are concerned that emergency crews did not respond to the scene in a timely manner.
Police say it is still unclear how the incident unfolded, so the case remains under investigation.
