Toms River redevelopment aims to give downtown area shot in the arm

(10/25/04) NEWARK A blaze labeled as suspicious by fire officials in Newark has left five residents without a home.

The fire broke out overnight Monday and spread through several buildings on Ferry Street between the intersection of Brill and Richards. Some residents say the fire, which took approximately three hours to contain, was preceded by a loud boom. Neighbors claim the buildings are frequently used by squatters.

No one was hurt during the incident, and investigators are now looking throughout the buildings for signs of arson. Some residents who lost their homes are staying in a nearby church.
