Gang fears have Sayreville cops vigilant at high school football game

(10/25/04) SAYREVILLE Fears of a gang turf war forced police to beef up their presence at War Memorial High School Monday for a rescheduled football game between Sayreville and South Brunswick.

The game was supposed to be played on October 22, but a tip off about a possible gang tussle between the Crips and the Bloods at the gridiron match resulted in the contests cancellation. While Sayreville police officials admit the threats may have been blown out of proportion, they say they were not going to take any chances.

Several Sayreville students are upset at the games cancellation because the event was part of their homecoming activities. The November 5 contest will now be the homecoming game.
