Bogota cops say they are target of unfair campaign tactics

(10/28/04) BOGOTA - Members of the Bogota Police Department say they are the target of an unfair campaign attack by Republican Councilman Nicholas Zampetti.

In his run for the Bogota Borough Council seat, Zampetti has placed ads in various locations that show the salaries and benefits the police officers receive. Zampetti says the work performed by the officers does not justify their average salary of $90,000 per year. The candidate also says he is trying to give residents the lowest tax bill possible.

Members of the Bogota Police Department have countered Zampettis claims by saying the salary numbers are inflated. A department spokesperson says he believes the councilman has a personal vendetta against the force.
