Irvington teachers take contract dispute to politicians

(10/28/04) WEST ORANGE Approximately 300 Irvington teachers picketed outside a Democratic dinner in West Orange Thursday to protest an ongoing contract dispute.

A contract between the teachers and the local board of education was ratified in September, but teachers say the state Department of Education is stopping that agreement from being implemented. According to the state, the contract cannot be given the green light because certain documents were not submitted by a set deadline.

The teachers say the states actions in the matter are illegal. They have filed a lawsuit, claiming the state is interfering with their collective bargaining.
