Little Egg Harbor school shot at by jet fighter; nobody harmed

(11/04/04) LITTLE EGG HARBOR Military officials are trying to find out why an F-16 pilot fired a machine gun at Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School during a training mission Wednesday night.

A custodian, in the building at the time of the incident, heard what was thought to be a person running on the ceiling of the school. Police were called to the scene, and it was later discovered that the jet had fired machine gun rounds at the building.

The fighter jet was on its way to the the Warren Grove Firing Range, which is located three and a half miles away from the school. A spokesperson for the U.S. Air National Guard says the aircraft involved in the apparent mishap is based out of Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

The identity of the pilot has not been released, and the Air National Guard says they are taking the incident very seriously.
