Verona officials pondering exit from Essex County

(11/04/04) VERONA Officials in Verona and other communities have begun looking at the pros and cons of seceding from Essex County.

Verona Deputy Mayor Santi Condorelli says many residents feel they are not getting their moneys worth of services from Essex County. However, Condorelli knows secession has its own set of problems that must be dealt with.

For example, the deputy mayor says it is not a given that neighboring counties will let Verona or any other interested communities join. He also says if Verona wants to start its own county, services to support residents must be created.

Essex County Executive Jospeh DiVincenzo is against the idea of secession. He is creating a task force that will look at ways to improve and streamline various aspects of the government.
