Suspicious device brings out bomb squad in Hoboken

(11/05/04) HOBOKEN The discovery of a suspicious device prompted a bomb squad response Friday in Hobokens Stevens Park.

A city parks employee found an object resembling a pipe bomb in a trashcan at approximately 10 a.m. After reporting the canisters discovery to his boss, the police were called in and sealed off the area. The nearby Saints Peter and Paul Church and school were evacuated in case the object turned out to be an explosive device.

The bomb squad arrived on the scene to investigate after a bomb-sniffing dog reacted to the object. It used a small explosive to open the canister, which turned out to be empty.
