Wounded member of Newark's finest makes detective

(11/09/04) NEWARK A Newark police officer wounded in the line of duty was rewarded for his hard work Tuesday with a promotion to the rank of detective.

Detective Eduardo Patinho was shot in the face on October 9 while he and his partner chased four suspected car thieves. The bullet tore through the detectives mouth, teeth, gums and bone. After returning fire, Patinho was rushed to an area hospital where he received treatment. The person believed to be responsible for the shooting was arrested days later.

Patinhos recovery is expected to take approximately 18 months. When he returns, he will be assigned to a special investigation unit.
