I-Team Investigates: The Bedminster Town Election

(11/09/04) BEDMINSTER Citing questionable voting procedures and a Republican smear campaign, two Democratic candidates in the Bedminster town election are demanding a recount.

Democrat Alan Mass says he appeared to be the winner of a council seat on election night until the provisional ballot tally, and the appearance of an absentee ballot, gave Republican Ken Joerger a one-vote victory. A member of the Bedminster Democratic Committee says the provisional ballots were illegally stored in unsealed bags. According to the council member, many Republicans who may have had access to the ballots were working at the polls on Election Day.

Mass running mate, Zaheer Jan, says he was the target of an unfair campaign that targeted his Pakistani background. Joerger and running mate Don Cross distributed flyers just before the election that claimed foreign nationals funded the Jan/Mass campaign. Jan says it is disgraceful that voters were asked to look at his ethnicity instead of the important issues. Mass likens the flyers to literature that might be distributed by the Ku Klux Klan.

Now, Jan and Mass may be battling their Republican opponents beyond Election Day in court.
