Cops break up multi-state OxyContin ring based in New Jersey
(11/11/04) NEWARK Police in New Jersey say they have arrested 18 people involved in a multi-state illegal OxyContin ring.
Police say the scheme not only involved pharmacists, but also members of the Lucchese crime family and members of the Bloods street gang. According to police, the plan to illegally distribute the powerful prescription narcotic was based in New Jersey and stretched from Boston to Arizona. A total of 17 arrests were made in the investigation authorities call Dr. Feelgood.
Investigators say the $10 to $15 price per pill of Oxycontin is often stretched to more than $100 on the street. OxyContin is a prescription painkiller that induces a high similar to heroin.
Police say more arrests will be made as part of the investigation.
