Thieves target cars in Chatham Borough
Police say thieves are targeting cars in Chatham Borough. During the past three weeks, 18 cars were broken into and four were stolen.
Police in Chatham are implementing more patrols at locations where the thieves have struck, including the train station parking lot and at several office lots on Main Street. Authorities say the thieves are targeting high-end vehicles, especially cars with xenon headlights-which retail at about $2,000 each.
Police say they are looking into a possible connection to a series of break-ins at several hotel parking lots during the summer in Morris County. Investigators theorize that the thieves could be part of a large organized car ring. They also say the thieves may have a connection street gangs.
Chatham police are teaming up with state police and New Jersey transit to catch the burglars. They ask that the public report anything suspicious.
