Tenants get eviction notices at Douglass Harrison complex in Newark

Tenants at the Douglass Harrison complex in Newark received eviction notices Friday. The tenants were told they must be out of their apartments by January 8, and they say they have no place to go.

The New Community Corporation (NCC), landlord of the complex located at Spruce and Barclay streets, say it is working with the city to resolve problems. NCC officials say they are trying to place the seniors of the complex and are referring other tenants to the Newark Housing Authority.

The executive director of NCC says the property has lost $13 million, and they cannot continue to maintain it. They add they plan to demolish and redevelop the location.

The tenants say they are planning a protest at the New Housing Authority on Monday, November 22.
