Journal Square makeover could provide boost for Jersey City economy

(11/23/04) JERSEY CITY A group in Jersey City is looking toward the future when it comes to revitalizing the Journal Square area.

Members of the Journal Square Special Improvement District say they want to bring affordable housing, retail stores, entertainment and possibly extra room for Hudson Community College to Journal Square. A representative of the district says the goal of the plan is to inject new life into the local economy.

Many residents say Journal Square was a social and financial hotspot in Jersey City in the 1940s and 1950s. The area recently made headlines when tenants of a Journal Square apartment building were forced out due to safety concerns.
