Newark Airport expects thousands of travelers during the Thanksgiving period

Residents packed the airports, train stations an bus terminal Wednesday as the annual Thanksgiving holiday travel rush kicked into high gear.

Although the crowds were large during the afternoon, travellers said their patience was good and things weren't as bad as they had expected. Airport officials are expecting 540,000 travelers during the Thanksgiving period.

Officials say the Thanksgiving holiday and weekend is the busiest travel period of the year. They add that approximately 5.5 million travelers are expected to use Port Authority airports, bridges and tunnels.

Travelers are urged to show up early for the increased security checks. Security personnel are asking people to take off their coats during searches. They add that all laptops and cameras must be removed from their cases to be screened.
