Asbury Park couple accused of starving infant son to death
(11/24/04) ASBURY PARK Authorities have accused an Asbury Park couple of starving their 14-month-old son to death.
Although Jmeier White died in August, prosecutors say they waited until now to press charges so they could research evidence and be sure of their claim. The childs mother, 22-year-old Tahija Handberry, has been arrested and is in custody. Wesley White, the father, has not been located.
The couple was previously investigated by DYFS in June when they were accused of not giving their daughter proper medical attention. Although the DYFS employee noticed Jmeier was undersized, the case was closed and the childs condition was not investigated further. Acting Governor Dick Codey calls the lack of follow-up by DYFS inexcusable.
Tahija Handberrys suffers from dwarfism, according to her aunt. The aunt also says this may explain the lack of attention paid to Jmeiers size. The infant weighed just 10 pounds, 4 ounces at his time of death. A member of the prosecutors office says he does not believe the crime was intentional.
