Fire destroys house, damages two others in Asbury Park; several left homeless
(11/27/04) ASBURY PARK - A fire engulfed one house and spread to two others on Third Avenue in Asbury Park on Saturday, leaving several people looking for new places to live.
The blaze destroyed 608 Third Avenue and quickly spread to neighboring homes. Asbury Park Fire Chief John Murphy says the top floors of 606 and 610 Third Avenue both have severe damage, and the lower floors have heavy water damage. But he adds those two homes appear to be salvageable.
A family of 10 lived in 606, and two people lived at 610 Third Avenue. There were seven children in the family living at 608 -- the house that must be torn down. The Red Cross is helping out those left homeless by the fire.
Chief Murphy confirmed that playing with matches was the cause of the blaze. There were no injuries.
