Trash troubles cause flooding fears near a Monmouth County lake

(11/30/04) ASBURY PARK Some Monmouth County residents say it is only a matter of time before the garbage in Deal Lake causes a major flooding problem in the area.

Residents say everything from leaves, telephone poles and campaign signs end up in the lake on a regular basis. The large amounts of trash, according to those living nearby, is clogging up an important flume that lets water flow into the ocean. The blockage could cause severe flooding if the area is hit with a major rainstorm.

Some local politicians have accused the Deal Lake Commission, in charge of overseeing the lakes upkeep, of turning their back on a growing problem. Members of the commission did not return News 12 New Jerseys phone calls.
