Residents cash in on new gun program in Monmouth County

(12/03/04) ASBURY PARK Residents are taking advantage of a new Monmouth County program aimed at getting guns off the street.

Residents participated Friday in a guns for cash program, run by the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office in Asbury Park. Program officials say they collected more than 70 weapons by mid-morning. They also say the most common type of gun collected was a revolver.

Some have questioned the programs effectiveness, saying the people turning in guns are not dangerous criminals. A few residents at the program say the weapons being turned in were old guns theyve had for years. However, officials from the prosecutors office say those firearms could end up in the wrong hands if not turned over to police.

The program will continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the corner of Main Street and Asbury Avenue in Asbury Park.
