Financial seminar for same-sex couples held in Asbury Park

(12/04/04) ASBURY PARK - Same-sex couples gathered Saturday morning in Asbury Park to learn how they can benefit from laws already in place for heterosexual couples.

Since Asbury Park held its first gay wedding in March, domestic partners are becoming more legally savvy. The financial seminar was meant to educate domestic partners on how to secure a stable financial future, deconstruct legal loopholes and teach valuable information that some heterosexuals may take for granted.

For instance, the financial asset transfer process upon a person's death can be more difficult for same-sex couples. A financial expert says a will is an essential document for gay couples.

The seminar's organizers are urging other same-sex couples to contact financial advisors and attorneys to learn their legal rights in a same-sex relationship.
