New Jersey native appears for pre-trial hearings in Iraqi prisoner abuse case

(12/04/04) ROSELLE - A New Jersey native was in a military courtroom Saturday facing charges that he abused prisoners in Iraq.

Sergeant Javal Davis of Roselle appeared for pre-trial hearings in Fort Hood, Texas. He claims he was ordered to abuse detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison.

His lawyer Paul Bergrin told News 12 New Jersey that his client was simply following orders. Bergrin filed motions for the case to be dismissed.

A judge will rule on whether the charges should be dropped during Sergeant Davis' court martial hearing on February 1.

Davis graduated from Roselle High School before joining the military and moving his family to Maryland.
