Newark church hopes to take over site of four recent murders for peaceful venture

(12/05/04) NEWARK - The murders of four people in Newark last week has residents looking for answers and police looking for suspects. Now, many frightened community members are making an effort to make the city a more peaceful place.

The four bodies were found killed execution style in the lot next to Saint Thomas Aquinas Church. The congregation and the city hope to turn the vacant lot into something positive for the community, especially for children. They are considering building a daycare and preschool with a playground.

But before that can happen, the legalities concerning the separation of church and state have to be worked out. St. Thomas of Aquinas does not own the property and cannot receive it as a donation unless it gets legal approval. That process is currently underway.
