Killer tomato prices in New Jersey attacking residents' wallets
(12/06/04) WOODBRIDGE Some residents and business owners say a spike in the cost of tomatoes is putting quite a dent in their wallets.
Although one local pizzeria does not pass the increased tomato cost on to its customers, other businesses dont seem to be as considerate. Some restaurants are charging extra for tomatoes or tomato-based products, such as ketchup. Some establishments are serving the costly vegetable by request only.
Consumers who routinely put tomatoes on their weekly shopping list have also felt the surge at the grocery store. Experts attribute the price hike to bad weather in certain tomato-growing states and transportation costs.
