Home construction gives economic hope to section of Newark
(12/14/04) NEWARK Officials believe a new home construction project will bring a residential and economic boost to part of Newarks South Ward.
Twenty-one two-family homes are under construction on Badger Avenue. Newark officials say the homes are unique because they are being built next to public housing. According to Newark Mayor Sharpe James, it is important to bring mixed economies into the same neighborhood for the purposes of economic development.
Newark Director of Economic and Housing Development Niathan Allen says the housing project is already paying economic dividends. According to Allen, a new supermarket and mini-mall are already in the works for the area.
Sixteen of the 21 houses have already been purchased. One new homeowner, Taren Mitchell, says she hopes the community can grow together and make something happen.
