Touching voice reaches out to the elderly in Passaic County

(12/20/04) WAYNE Many shut-in elderly residents in Wayne can count on receiving some reassuring phone calls on a regular basis.

As part of the Passaic County Telephone Reassurance Program, 82-year-old Peter Salzano calls senior citizens to ensure various programs are running smoothly. Salzano checks in on approximately 70 people per day, 5 days a week to follow up on services such as Meals On Wheels.

Many of those on the receiving end of the phone calls say Salzano makes them feel comfortable. Salzano also gets high marks from his supervisors for his efforts.

Salzano was once a traffic supervisor for a trucking company. His salary now comes from part of a federal grant.
