New Jersey State police mounting new effort for safe shopping

(12/21/04) IRVINGTON In an effort to keep shoppers safe during the days leading up to Christmas, New Jersey State police have begun mounted patrols in Irvington.

Police officials say the new patrols were created to increase the police presence downtown. In addition, officials say the horses used by the patrols will help get the attention of both residents and potential criminals in the area.

A spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police Department says people need to feel safe while shopping. By supplying increased security, police officials hope to boost the profits of local businesses.
