Neptune man accused of fatally punching boy appears in court
A Neptune man accused of punching and killing his wifes 5-year-old son appeared in court for the first time Tuesday.
Prosecutors say Royce Berry, 24, punched Kedar Norris in the stomach while babysitting the boy last March. Authorities claim the blow ruptured Norriss small intestine, which later caused his death. Investigators say Berry waited a day and a half before seeking medical attention for the boy. They also claim Norris may have had a chance to survive if he was taken to a doctor sooner.
Norriss death has increased government and public scrutiny of the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS). Reports from the New Jersey Office of the Child Advocate state Norris may have been previously abused, possibly by Berry.
Berry, who is being held on $150,000 bail, is charged with reckless manslaughter and child endangerment. A grand jury will make a decision about the case in February.
