Family in Orange reunited after man steals car with 5-year-old inside

A mother in Orange is back together with her daughter Wednesday after a man stole her car with her 5-year-old inside.

Police say the mother left the car running with her child inside. The woman says when she came back, she saw the suspect trying to get into her car. She told police she struggled with the man, who knocked her down and sped off with her daughter in the back seat.

An Amber Alert was issued as state and Orange police searched the area. The car was found, with the girl unharmed inside, on North Day Street, a few blocks away from the incident.

Police are not saying whether the man who stole the car knew the family. Police say charges may be pending against the mother. The case is being referred to the Essex County prosecutor. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Orange police at (973) 266-4111 ext. 5047.
