Garfield school officials accused of barring asthmatic girl from bus

(12/22/04) GARFIELD A distraught mother says Garfield education officials are barring her asthmatic daughter from taking the bus to school.

Verna Jackson says despite providing all the necessary paperwork, the Garfield School District will not let 6-year-old Aaliyah Jackson ride the bus seven blocks to her school building. District rules dictate Jacksons apartment is too close to the school for bus service.

However, Jacksons daughter suffers from severe respiratory problems as the result of a premature birth. Jackson says her daughters asthma makes walking the seemingly short distance to the school building very difficult.

The principal of School 7 says Jackson needs to provide a current doctors note in order for an exception to be made for Aaliyah. According to Jackson, a current note has already been faxed to school officials. She says she was told her daughter needed to be examined by a district physician.

Jackson has been keeping her daughter home from school until the situation is resolved. Shes hoping her daughter can return after the Christmas recess on January 3.
