Five families evacuate homes in Elizabeth due to fear of building collapse

Five families were forced to evacuate their homes in Elizabeth Wednesday night due to a fear the buildings might collapse.

City officials say work was being done next door to the two houses on First Street. They say a new six-family structure is being built and workers have been digging a trench for the footing of the new structure.

A structural engineer is expected to check and secure the two homes Thursday. Red Cross is helping the families that were evacuated from their houses.
