Police in East Orange warn motorists of headlight heists

(12/23/04) EAST ORANGE Police in East Orange are warning motorists about speedy crooks with one item at the top of their Christmas wish list Xenon headlights.

The headlights, which give off a blue tint, are designed to give drivers better visibility on the road. However, they have become a popular target for thieves looking to make a quick buck. Police officials say criminals can fetch approximately $200 to $400 per light on the black market.

Some residents may also be surprised to find out how quickly a thief can boost a pair of the popular headlights. According to police officials in East Orange, a skilled criminal can make off with Xenon headlights from a late-model car in just 10 seconds.

Authorities urge motorists to park in well-lit areas to prevent theft of their Xenon headlights. They also say parking against a wall or fence will cut down on a crooks workspace.
