Molotov cocktail hurler sought by Newark police

(12/29/04) NEWARK Newark police are searching a woman who tossed a Molotov cocktail at the Baxter Terrace apartments Wednesday morning.

Although no one was hurt in the incident, area residents say the homemade weapon could have hit a child or passerby. A fire department spokesperson says the Molotov cocktail actually extinguished its own flames when it hit the ground in the complexs courtyard.

Many residents who live in the apartments say they are not surprised by acts of violence anymore. The apartments were the scene of a deadly Christmas shooting in which one person was killed and five others were wounded.

Authorities say they have the license plate number of the vehicle the suspect was driving. The woman tossed the weapon in the same area where a routine Newark police checkpoint was taking place.
