DEA hopes to send message with Asbury Park drug sting

(01/04/05) ASBURY PARK ? DEA officials say an Asbury Park raid has helped sweep away the remnants of a once-powerful drug gang.

According to DEA officials and members of the Monmouth County prosecutor?s office, six members of the Asbury Park Organization gang were arrested Tuesday. Authorities say the Asbury Park Organization was once a powerful force in the Monmouth County drug trade until a summer sting nabbed 38 of its members. Investigators hope Tuesday?s operation will put a final stop to the group?s activities in the area.

Police say the members arrested Tuesday were involved in the distribution of crack and heroin. A spokesperson for the DEA says he hopes the sweep sends a message to anyone thinking about dealing drugs in the area.
