Jersey City launching anonymous gun buyback program

(01/06/05) JERSEY CITY ? Jersey City officials are beginning a new gun buyback program in an effort to make the streets a safer place.

?Operation Lifesaver? will allow residents to anonymously turn in weapons for cash. The city is offering $150 for standard handguns, rifles and shotguns. The rate for automatic weapons is $250. Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy has donated $1,000 of his own money to get the program off the ground.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward J. DeFazio says the program is worthwhile even if it doesn?t significantly reduce the city?s crime rate.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the program can call (201) 547-5500.
