New Jersey veterans defend congressman after committee ejection

(01/07/05) TOMS RIVER ? Veterans throughout New Jersey are stunned at the sudden removal of Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) from the House Veterans Affairs Committee.

Smith was ousted as the committee?s chairman and removed from the committee altogether by House Republicans. Many veterans say they are firmly against the move based on Smith?s positive job performance as a member of the committee for more than 20 years. The congressman became committee chairman four years ago.

Many feel Smith?s differences with Republican leaders over spending issues led to his removal. He was replaced by Indiana Congressman Steve Buyer (R-IN).
