Catholic Diocese of Metuchen adopts diocese in South India for tsunami relief

(01/09/05) EAST BRUNSWICK - The Catholic Diocese of Metuchen remembered the tsunami victims with a special mass on Sunday. The service was held at Saint Bartholomew's Church in East Brunswick where a majority of the parishioners are Asian Pacific.

Nearly 1,000 Catholics packed the church to pray for the victims in South Asia. Some offered prayers for hope, health and strength in their native language.

Bishop Bootkoski asked parishioners to take up a special collection for the victims, and the donations poured in. Even children got involved, offering flowers and candles in memory of the lives lost.

Additionally, the Diocese of Metuchen adopted a diocese in South India. They expect their commitment in South Asia to last at least two years. Members of the Diocese of Metuchen also plan to send volunteers to help with relief efforts in South Asia.
