Witness changes tune during Rutgers sex assault trial

(01/10/05) NEW BRUNSWICK ? A jury heard testimony from a key prosecution witness Monday in the trial of a man police say was involved in a robbery and sexual assault incident at apartments near Rutgers University.

Prosecutors say Timothy Heard, Raymond Dargan and two other individuals sexually assaulted three women during a robbery. Dargan, who pleaded guilty to robbery charges stemming from the crime, changed his tune Monday and told the jury that 19-year-old Heard was just involved in the robbery of the apartments.

Originally, Dargan told police Heard was involved in the sexual assault. However, Dargan now says Heard was just involved in the robbery. The witness claims police coerced him into implicating Heard in the sex attack.

Prosecutors say the story change may be part of a plan between Heard and Dargan to pin the rape on another suspect.
