Jury shown secret recordings during arms deal trial in Newark

(01/11/05) NEWARK ? Jurors witnessed secret videotaped recordings Tuesday in the trial of a man accused of trying to sell shoulder-fired missiles to a terrorist group.

Prosecutors say Hemant Lakhani tried to sell the weapons to terrorists so the group could shoot down a commercial airliner. However, investigators say the terrorist representative was actually a government informant.

In a Newark courtroom, the prosecution showed jurors secretly recorded footage of what they say is Lakhani trying to broker the arms deal in April 2002 at an Elizabeth hotel. Prosecutors say the recordings capture Lakhani making disparaging remarks about the United States and expressing his desire for a 9/11 anniversary attack.

Lakhani?s lawyers say the case is a clear situation of entrapment.
