Defendant in Rutgers rape trial takes stand to defend himself
(01/12/05) NEW BRUNSWICK ? The man on trial for being part of a Rutgers-area robbery and rape incident took the stand in a New Brunswick courtroom Wednesday to defend himself.
Timothy Heard, 19, said he did not take part in the sexual assault and robbery of three women in apartments near Rutgers University. Heard says the three individuals who have already pleaded guilty for the crime asked him to participate, but he turned down the invitation. The defendant testified he met up with the trio later that night after the assault.
During closing arguments, defense lawyers told jurors Heard?s appearance on a hospital surveillance tape after the attack is further evidence of his innocence. Attack victims say their assailants were all dressed in dark clothing, and lawyers say Heard appears on the tape wearing white clothes.
The jury will begin deliberations Thursday.
