Jury in New Brunswick begins deliberations in the Rutgers rape trial

The jury started deliberations Thursday in the Rutgers rape trial in New Brunswick.

The jury must decide if 19-year-old Timothy Heard is guilty of a robbery and sexual assault that took place at an apartment near Rutgers University last March. Judge Fredrick DeVesa spent an hour giving the jury detailed instructions on how to consider the evidence.

After receiving their instructions, the jury came back with questions about certain parts of the trial. One of the items they asked for was a read back of testimony describing the suspects.

Three other men have pleaded guilty in this case. Heard is accused of sexually assaulting one of the women in the apartment. Heard testified Wednesday that he was never in the apartment but later met up with the other men.

Heard is charged with armed robbery and aggravated sexual assault.
